Greta Thunberg gets linked to Simone Biles
The scene escalated from a routine immigration enforcement action to chaotic protests, with some demonstrators standing on flaming cars waving Mexican flags, as if in a video game victory. The White House had directed ICE to target undocumented workers waiting in these parking lots—akin to the gig economy’s informal hiring spots—where workers seek quick jobs paid under the table.
In response, much of the progressive movement rallied to defend these workers, proclaiming them as hardworking individuals performing jobs “Americans won’t do.” But when did supporting this exploited labor force become a left-wing cause? Historically, the left fought against such exploitation. Corporate America must be pleased: the revolution now champions cheap, compliant labor, backed by hashtag activism that brands opposition as fascism.
This shift hands the working class to pro-Trump populists on a silver platter. To genuinely support undocumented workers, activists should oppose the foreign policies—sanctions, economic sabotage, CIA interference, and extraterritorial laws—that displace these communities in the first place.
Past activists understood this interconnected struggle. Cesar Chavez not only fasted for farmworkers but opposed the Vietnam War, recognizing exploitation extends beyond borders. Tom Hayden fought for both unions and peace, while Dorothy Day founded the Catholic Worker Movement and consistently challenged imperialism.
